CEREC - Ceramic Restoration in a Day!

Dr. Holm uses the latest TECHNOLOGY to create and maintain beautiful and healthy smiles.
CEREC – Single-Visit Porcelain ONLAY Restorations–Created IN  OFFICE!

CEREC ONLAY restorations are used to restore decayed, weakened, broken or cracked teeth (that in most dental offices, would receive a Full Crown.)

  • WHY ONLAYS?   PRESERVE YOUR NATURAL TOOTH STRUCTURE instead of doing a conventional full crown. In patient lingo, we do not have to “grind the tooth down" as we do for a crown!   Less removal of tooth structure means lower risk of a root canal, and PRESERVING more remaining NATURAL tooth structure for today's longer life expectancies. (Studies have shown the more enamel that remains, the better the longevity of the tooth.) This approach has become very popular.

  • These ALL-CERAMIC RESTORATIONS  eliminate the ugly black line you may have seen next to the gum line on older crowns.

  • Onlays can be less expensive than crowns, because they rarely require the additional “build-up” procedure.

  • Onlays are easier than full crowns to monitor on x-rays and visually.  Most margins are above the gumline, and easier for a patient to keep clean.

  • CEREC restorations have the same "modulus of elasticity" as natural tooth structure. This means they move and flex with the tooth during biting forces and extreme temperature changes that occur in the mouth.

  • In comparison, let’s look at the alternative:  Silver fillings are too rigid, acting as a wedge which contributesto much of the cracking we see around old fillings. White Resin Fillings do look better, but they are plastic and are too flexible when used in large restorations, risking further cracking of weakened tooth structure. Full Crowns require prepping the tooth down circumferentially down to the gumline, to make room for the crown material. With today’s Ceramic Onlay, wefinally have an intermediate option that falls between a Filling and aFull Crown offering patients a conservative, strong, and beautiful choice!

  • There are cases where a tooth would be better served by a lab-made conventional Full Crown instead of an Onlay: Where there is no remaining enamel, such as a tooth that has been previously crowned, the decay goes far below the gumline, patients who have high decay rates, or clench and grind their teeth.  The Bond strength is low when there is no remaining enamel.  Unlike a bonded ceramic onlay, A Full crown is not dependent on enamel and confers a much stronger result in these cases.  CEREC is an expensive technology for a dental office to own and operate.   As a result, some offices use it as a “one-size-fits-all” for every case, in an effort to cover the added overhead expenses. Dr Holm will recommend it only where she feels it is the best option for the patient and the specific tooth. The materials are continually advancing, and we will do as much as we can with this amazing technology as it continues to improve in the area of full crowns.
  • CEREC technology is revolutionary to dentistry because it creates a beautiful, esthetic, strong and durable ceramic restoration that is precisely bonded to the tooth. It is accomplished using a digital scan of the prepared tooth and creating the restoration's design using powerful 3D software that allows the dentist to customize the result. The design is wirelessly transmitted to a special milling device that will create your restoration using a dental ceramic. Because this is done in one visit you do not need to have an“impression” made of your tooth, you do not need to wear a temporary crown and you do not need to come back on a separate visit, weeks later.
